Case Study: Asbestos Demolition Surveys for The Hill Group – Coventry City Centre Regeneration Project
The Hill Group is a 5-star, award-winning housebuilder fervently invested in community development. They have a dynamic business model that nods towards maximising public assets by creating sustainable, health-promoting spaces conducive to happiness and overall wellbeing.
BUSINESS NEED
Amid their visionary pursuit of regenerating communities, The Hill Group plans to undertake an extensive redevelopment of the Coventry City Centre. Outline Planning Approval was granted for the City Centre South scheme in April 2021.
The regeneration, which has already secured £98m in funding from the West Midlands Combined Authority is located in the southern part of the city centre and is made up of 6.4 hectares / 15 acres (the equivalent of nine football pitches), including Bull Yard, Shelton Square, Market Way, City Arcade.
The developer Shearer Property Regen Ltd wants to deliver new homes, a hotel, a cinema, retail and restaurants along with co-working and community spaces. These proposals will create a new focal point for all of Coventry’s communities to come together, as well as drawing in visitors, with an inviting new public realm and accessible events space at its heart.
HOW DID WE HELP?
Prior to the redevelopment project, the asbestos demolition surveys of various properties in the Coventry City Centre were a critical prerequisite. Acorn Analytical Services worked alongside Hill for a duration of two years during the initial survey phase. The buildings were of different construction types with varying types of asbestos containing materials meaning no survey was the same.
There were also a number of challenges faced along the way with many properties being in disrepair and infested by pigeons. The Hill Group entrusted Acorn to deal with these issues, instructing environmental cleans prior to the commencement of the surveys where required.
