Tackling asbestos in Britain’s football stadiums

Asbestos in football stadiums

Football is a game of fine margins. While players focus on making the perfect tackle on the pitch, stadiums have another challenge to contend with off it – tackling the hidden risk of asbestos.

As World Cup fever grips the country, we thought it would be timely to talk about the work we do at Acorn in relation to the beautiful game.

Every week, thousands of supporters pass through the turnstiles of football stadiums across Britain without giving a second thought to the structure around them.

Behind every matchday, an enormous amount of work goes into ensuring stadiums remain safe for supporters, players, staff and contractors. For many clubs, that includes managing a hidden legacy left behind by the materials used to construct and develop their grounds decades ago.

Since 2013, Acorn Analytical Services has been helping football clubs across the UK do exactly that, carrying out asbestos surveys, air testing and consultancy services at stadiums of all sizes, from small local clubs to Premier League teams.

Do all football stadiums in the UK contain asbestos?

Britain is home to some of the oldest and most iconic football stadiums in the world. While many have undergone significant redevelopment over the years, large parts of these venues were built or extended long before asbestos was banned in the UK in 1999.

As a result, asbestos-containing materials (ACMs) can still be found in many football stadiums built before 1999.

These materials can be found in areas such as:
• Pipe insulation
• Roofing
• Changing rooms
• Hospitality suites
• Offices
• Plant rooms
• Boiler rooms
• Service tunnels
• Ceiling voids

The presence of asbestos does not automatically make a building unsafe. If asbestos-containing materials remain in good condition and are properly managed, they can often remain safely in place.

The risk arises when refurbishment works, maintenance activities or accidental damage disturb these materials, releasing hazardous asbestos fibres into the air.

How can football clubs stay compliant when it comes to asbestos management?

Nowadays, modern football stadiums are much more than places to watch football.

They are conference venues, entertainment spaces, hospitality destinations and community hubs that operate throughout the year. At the same time, clubs continue to invest in improvements, from upgraded seating and hospitality areas to enhancing accessibility.

Before refurbishment or demolition work takes place, duty holders have a legal responsibility to identify whether asbestos is present and ensure it is managed safely.

That’s why asbestos surveys are such an important part of any planned works.

Identifying asbestos early helps clubs remain compliant with the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012, protects everyone working on site and avoids costly delays if asbestos is discovered once projects have already begun.

Keeping everyone safe at football matches

While supporters may only spend a few hours inside a stadium on matchday, maintenance teams, contractors, catering staff, security personnel and club employees can spend hundreds of hours there every year.

Effective asbestos management protects everyone who uses the facility, whether they’re cheering from the stands, working behind the scenes or carrying out essential maintenance.

For more than a decade, Acorn Analytical Services has worked with football clubs across the UK, providing trusted asbestos consultancy that helps stadium operators manage risk with confidence.

Our team understands the unique challenges of working within busy sporting venues, where safety and compliance are equally as important as minimising disruption to day-to-day operations.

We can also visit premises in unbranded clothing and unmarked vans to be discreet when required.

If your football stadium, sports venue or leisure facility was built before 2000, or you’re planning refurbishment or maintenance works, Acorn Analytical Services can help you understand your asbestos responsibilities and ensure your premises remain safe, compliant and ready for every fixture.

A spokesperson for Walsall Football Club said:
