Sam Savage celebrates two years at Acorn

Back in the summer of 2022, we announced that Sam Savage had joined Acorn Analytical Services as our Commercial Director, working out of the Northampton office and covering the South of England.

Sam joined the business with more than 20 years in the asbestos industry and quickly made an impact – so much so, that in January 2024, he was made Managing Director of Acorn Analytical Services’ Southern office.

We talked to Sam about his first two years at Acorn Analytical Services…

What have been the biggest highlights of the last two years at Acorn for you?

There have been so many!

I am hugely proud of our team. At the beginning of this year, we established a new, strong leadership team. Since then, we have gone on to win some big contracts and recruit some great new talent through our #ChooseAcorn recruitment campaign. This process also naturally led to us giving our employee benefits package a bit of a revamp and it is now one of – if not the best – in the industry. I am really proud of that. We have managed to double our revenue in the last two years and that would not have been possible without the hard work and loyalty of everyone that works here. Also, they make me look good!!

Some of the projects we have worked on in the last two years have been real highlights too. Surprisingly, the larger, more challenging projects stick in my mind as we were able to showcase our experience and specialist knowledge and get them completed with no issues – a real testament to the team.

We’ve also won and been finalists for numerous awards as a business in the last two years, including at national awards ceremonies such as the National Building and Construction Awards and the National SME Awards at Wembley Stadium. We are also in the running for some awards this year, so I am looking forward to the awards ceremonies coming around. They are always a good night out!

Has your Acorn journey been what you expected when you started?

I had known the other directors – Neil, Ian and Paul – for many years before I joined the company and knew we shared the same core values. I could also see a huge amount of growth potential in the business and was keen to release it! The fact that we have been able to double our revenue since I started has proved I was right in seeing that potential and there is still so much to achieve and further growth to come.

My Acorn journey has been so much better than expected. The support from the other directors has been exceptional and the fact that all staff are on board and rowing in the same direction makes things so much easier. In the last two years, we have done a lot of work with the team around Acorn’s vision and values and how we can ensure that Acorn is the number one place to work and this has seen members of the team start posting regularly on social media about what they are doing at work and how much they love working at Acorn too, which is great to see. They have also started organising company social events including a brunch and summer social with plans to do more.

On a personal note, seeing what has been achieved since 2022 has given me increased confidence. I have grown and developed as a person over the last two years and it means the world to have been entrusted with running this business and showing what I can do.

What are your plans for the future?

I want to continue to grow Acorn Analytical Services tobe one of the leading independently, privately owned asbestos companies in the UK, as well as continuing to develop, support and nurture all of our staff so they are the best they can be.

We are also planning to open more regional offices in the South East and South West, so stay tuned for more information on that.

I also want to continue having as much fun as possible while achieving all of this!
