This year has been particularly tough for Sales Administrator, Sarah, whose two young sons were both diagnosed with Becker Muscular Dystrophy within weeks of each other.
Inspired by her family’s story, the team at Acorn Analytical Services has pledged to walk or run a Mile a Day in May to raise money and awareness for Muscular Dystrophy UK in the hope that one day a cure will be found.
Here, Sarah bravely shares her story and her thoughts on how the money we raise will help to support others facing similar challenges.
‘More needs to be done to raise awareness of Muscular Dystrophy’
“My story started last year when my older son, Harris, who is eight, kept falling asleep at school.
“He went through a series of blood tests before having a creatine kinase test in January which came back extremely high.
“At the time, the doctor suggested that it could be Muscular Dystrophy and recommended that he had genetic testing.
“At the same time, my youngest son, Lucas, who is only four and is non-verbal, went through similar tests and we didn’t really think a lot of it.
“The genetic testing results take a long time to come through but when they did, we learned that both boys have Becker Muscular Dystrophy, an extremely rare condition which only affects boys and men. Currently, 1 in 30,000 males in the UK are affected and there is very little in the way of information or support.
“We just don’t know what the future holds. All we know for sure is that it is a progressive disease and that at present, there is no cure.
“That has to change.
“I would love to see more support for families like ours – there needs to be information or support groups were people like us can go.
“We have to raise awareness and the team at Acorn has been absolutely amazing – I couldn’t be more grateful for everything they have done to support us.”
Show your support for a Mile a Day in May
When the team at Acorn learned about Sarah’s story, we knew we had to something to help.
Very quickly a team from Acorn was put together, each one pledging to run or walk a Mile a Day in May to help raise awareness and money for this vital charity.
Throughout the month, the team has racked up the miles in any way possible, making the most of the recent spring sunshine to add to the final total. The hard work has even continued abroad with members of the team adding to their step count during holidays in Rome and Malta!
It really has been a family affair, with everyone pulling together as one for support Sarah and to do everything we can to help raise awareness of this devastating condition.
