Mesothelioma: Celebrating the work of Mesothelioma UK’s nurses

Mesothelioma - celebrating the work of nurses

IF you’re a regular reader of our blog, you’ll know that mesothelioma – the cancer caused by exposure to asbestos fibres – is a cause close to all our hearts.

Over the years, we’ve worked closely with Mesothelioma UK, the only charity in the UK dedicated to supporting people living with mesothelioma and their families, raising awareness of the hidden dangers of the asbestos as well as the practical ways people can stay safe and protected.

As today marks International Nurses Day, we want to celebrate the work of Mesothelioma UK’s nurses across the UK, who do so much to support people living with this terrible disease.

Supporting the work of Mesothelioma UK

As one of the largest independent asbestos consultancies in the UK we spend every day surveying buildings for the presence of asbestos and giving businesses and other organisations the tools they need to manage it safely, within the law and the latest regulations.

But for many people it’s already too late.

As awareness of the dangers of asbestos begins to fade, the potential risk for millions of people begins to increase, particularly as many of the buildings which still contain asbestos are getting older and are starting to decay.

The result of exposure to asbestos is mesothelioma – a deadly cancer which usually affects the lungs or stomach. To date, there are no meaningful treatments or a cure.

More than 2,500 people in the UK are diagnosed with mesothelioma every year, a figure which, according to Mesothelioma UK, is likely to increase.

It can affect anyone, of any age, from any background and being diagnosed can be a huge shock – for the individual and their family too.

Mesothelioma UK provide a wide range of services to anyone affected by the disease, including a team of clinical nurse specialists who committed to improving standards of care.

Nurses are also on hand to offer support over the phone and can be contacted by calling 0800 169 2409 or via email at support@mesotheliomauk.com.

Asbestos: Managing the risk

The key to protecting yourself and those around you from the dangers of asbestos lies in awareness.

For many people, asbestos is a long-forgotten problem, but the truth is asbestos is all around us – in homes, in offices, in factories and in schools.

The only way to know for sure if your building is free from asbestos is to get it checked by a qualified, UKATA-trained surveyor who will carry out a thorough assessment and give you a definitive answer in a matter of days.

At Acorn Analytical Services we turn around all our assessments within five working days giving you the reassurance and peace of mind you need to move forward.

If asbestos is found, we’ll be by your side offering all the information you need to manage the problem safely and efficiently and within the latest rules and regulations.

If you’re interested in learning more about the wide range of services we offer you’ll find a number of important resources on our website, including a podcast, Asbestos Knowledge Empire, a best-selling book, Asbestos: The Dark Arts, as well as helpful advice to get you started.

And if you need to chat, we’re always here. You can get in touch via our website, www.acorn-as.com or by calling us on 0844 818 0895.
