MORE women than ever are being affected by exposure to asbestos according to statistics published by Cancer Research UK.
Between 2016 and 2018 rates of mesothelioma – the cancer caused by exposure to asbestos fibres -soared by 93% in women. Among those affected is 78-year-old Susan Ellis who recently shared her story with the Daily Mail.
Susan believes she was first exposed to the dangerous fibres while working at a firm of architects during the 1960s. During a visit to a construction site, Susan says she saw asbestos was being sprayed onto the ceilings.
Shockingly she now believes she may only has months to live.
We’re ready to tackle the problem head on
The truth is that many people – like Susan – are dying way before their time – and it has to stop.
In the UK we have some of the highest death rates from mesothelioma in the world mainly due to the fact that asbestos was so widely used in new buildings after the Second World War. Every death is entirely preventable.
We are still living in and using those buildings every day. Large numbers of hospitals, shops and even schools contain this deadly material and could pose a significant risk to health.
At Acorn Analytical Services, we’re leading the fight and our team of experts is here to help anyone who is worried about asbestos or thinks it may be present in their building.
The important thing is not to ignore it. Taking action today could help to save a life tomorrow.
Worried about asbestos? Call in the experts
If you live or work in a building built before 2000 it is essential that a full survey is carried out to check for the presence of asbestos.
There are three types of survey:
- Asbestos Management
- Asbestos Refurbishment
- Asbestos Demolition.
A management survey is your first line of defence against asbestos.
Generally speaking, a management survey will include visual inspections of ceilings, walls, floors, accessible ducts, service risers and lofts to locate any asbestos at surface-level.
A full refurbishment survey is essential if you are carrying out any repairs or refurbishment project on your building. They are used to locate and all asbestos-containing materials (ACMs) within a building or part of a building before any building work takes place and should always be carried out when the building is empty.
A demolition survey is a requirement when a building is being demolished. This type of survey is invasive and extremely thorough, checking for the presence of fibres beneath carpets and floor coverings, within walls and ceilings, behind claddings and partitions, within structural supports and within loft and floor voids.
All of our surveys are carried out by fully-trained, UKAS-accredited professionals, so you can rest assured that you’re in safe hands.
