Acorn Analytical Services – leading the way in the fight against asbestos epidemic

Dan Crask and David Kelsey represent asbestos management consultancy, Acorn, at the NBCAs

IT has been a busy year for the team at Acorn Analytical Services as we continue to work with new clients, grow our team and cement our place as one of the leading asbestos management companies in the UK.

As we approach the end of the year, we thought we would take a moment to look back on some of our highlights from 2022.

Ian marks 20 years in the asbestos industry

In January, director Ian Stone passed a major milestone as he marked 20 years in the asbestos industry.

In a blog to mark the occasion, Ian said that asbestos was still a major threat to health.

He said: “Some organisations do a good job of managing their asbestos – you tend to find that those who are aware of the dangers manage their legal responsibilities well. However, week in week out we see the same problems now that we were seeing in the asbestos industry in 2002.

“Asbestos poses such a huge risk to health but we’re still going to premises that have never had an asbestos management survey and don’t have an asbestos register showing where their asbestos is situated. It’s as if these organisations are unaware of everything that has happened during the past 20 years – as though they’ve not heard about the ban on the use of the asbestos or the thousands of people who die in this country every year from asbestos-related diseases.

“It isn’t a good idea to stick your head in the sand and ignore the problem because it won’t go away. “If you do this, you could end up putting lives at risk and your organisation could be prosecuted.”

Shining a light on the women in our business

To mark International Women’s Day in March, we celebrated the work of our amazing female colleague, Emma Gooding.

Emma joined Acorn as an asbestos surveyor two years ago. She said: “I love working for Acorn and I hope to add more feathers to my cap as my experience and knowledge continues to grow.

“Working as an asbestos surveyor always keep you on your toes. It’s incredible how many sites I go to where work has been carried out which has caused excessive damage to asbestos products.

“It’s worrying what you come across but it’s good to know that the work we do helps people to stay safe.”

Sam joins the team

Sam Savage joined the team as Commercial Director in June, looking after the sales function of the businesses and caring for Acorn’s clients.

Speaking at the time Sam said: “I have known directors, Neil, Ian and Paul, for many years and we share the same core values. I know how they operate and how much they value their staff so there was no other option for me.

“Alongside this, there is a huge amount of potential here for significant growth and I hope to be able to impart some of my experience and knowledge to the team, and the business in general, to help them release that potential.”

Celebrating our success

The team at Acorn Analytical Services was delighted to win a host of prestigious awards in 2022.

In June, we were named Employer of the Year at the Northamptonshire SME Awards in recognition of the work we do to support our team and make Acorn Analytical Services a great place to work.

In November, we won the silver award in the Consultancy of the Year category at the National Building and Construction Awards in Wembley, while Jake Newell was a finalist in the Apprentice of the Year category at the Northamptonshire Business Excellence Awards.

In December it was announced that Jake had been named Rising Star UK by SHP Magazine, which recognises passionate and dedicated young people just starting our in their careers in health and safety.

We are delighted for Jake and are looking forward to supporting all our clients in 2023 and beyond.
