FOR many years the team at Acorn Analytical Services has been an avid supporter of Mesothelioma UK, the only charity in the UK dedicated to supporting people affected by this deadly disease.
Mesothelioma is a cancer caused by exposure to asbestos fibres and shockingly still kills around 5,000 people each year in the UK – 25 years after the use of asbestos was officially banned in new buildings in the UK.
As one of the leading asbestos management consultancies in the UK, it’s a cause close to all our hearts and on Thursday, September 21, a team of four brave members of Acorn’s team will be taking part in a 24-hour bike ride on behalf of the charity by raising vital funds to support its work.
Pedal power will help to raise pounds
Starting on Thursday morning the Acorn team will take it in turns to ride throughout the day and night, supported by members of Acorn’s team, who will keep them going with drinks, snacks and plenty of encouragement.
Director Ian Stone said: “We’re so proud of the team for taking part in this 24-hour bike ride to raise money for a charity which is hugely important.
“Mesothelioma UK do an enormous amount to support people who are forced to live with the devastating effects of asbestos – a legacy which haunts us all.
“While our work focusses on giving people the information and support they need to manage asbestos safely, we also want to support those who haven’t been so lucky.
“With the support of the Northamptonshire business community behind us, we hope to be able to raise awareness on behalf of the charity, as well as much-needed funds which will go a long way to helping people get the support they need.”
Raising awareness of the dangers of asbestos
Over the years, Acorn Analytical Services has supported Mesothelioma UK in many different ways – by raising funds and awareness of the work they do.
Back in November we also had the pleasure of speaking with Chief Executive, Liz Darlison, for an episode of our podcast, Asbestos: Knowledge Empire, hosted by directors Ian Stone and Neil Munro, in which she explained more about how mesothelioma develops and its symptoms.
The use of asbestos, which was at its peak in the UK during the 1960s and 1970s, and the risks of developing mesothelioma are inextricably linked, with a new campaign launched by The Sunday Times, #ActNowOnAsbestos calling on the Government to commit to a phased removal of asbestos from public buildings, including hospitals and schools, over the next 40 years.
Typically, the symptoms of mesothelioma include shortness of breath, chest pain, cough, sweating, loss of appetite, weight loss, tiredness and lethargy. While important research into how the disease develops continues, there are currently no meaningful treatments and no cure.
By taking part in this latest fundraising challenge, we hope we can raise as much money as possible for Mesothelioma UK and help to build a brighter future for everyone affected by this devastating disease.
