Asbestos – silent killer dominating national headlines once again

Asbestos is dominating the headlines once again

ASBESTOS has once again dominated the headlines this weekend with The Sunday Times focussing on the stories of real people who have been affected by this hidden killer.

Research shows there could be as much as six million tonnes of asbestos contained within 1.5 million buildings in the UK – including 90% of hospitals and 80% of schools.

What’s more shocking is that many people could be living and working in these premises without even realising it’s there.

So, what steps should you be taking to ensure your buildings are safe? The team at Acorn Analytical Services explains more.

Asbestos: Understanding the risks

According to Mesothelioma UK, a national charity which supports people living with and affected mesothelioma – 2,700 people are diagnosed with the disease every year.

The disease is primarily caused by exposure to asbestos fibres and can affect anyone of any age, at any time.

There are no effective treatments, or a cure, and survival rates among those affected remain extremely low.

The biggest issue facing the UK is a lack of awareness when it comes to asbestos, with many people thinking it is a long-forgotten problem. This can lead to it being damaged or disturbed accidently without the correct health and safety procedures being followed.

At Acorn Analytical Services we are committed to raising awareness to ensure that people are protected and as safe as possible.

The steps you should take – today

If you have never carried had an survey carried out, arranging one could be the most important decision you ever make.

This is particularly important if your building was built before 1999 when the use of asbestos in new buildings was banned in the UK, or if you are about to start work of any kind.

Carried out by highly-trained consultants, a survey will check for the presence of asbestos in your building giving you the answers you need quickly.

There are three main types:

Our consultants will carry out the survey which best suits your individual circumstances providing professional guidance throughout.

If asbestos is found, we’ll advice you on the steps you need to take next.

Make sure you’re informed
