Asbestos analyst Jake is a shining example of how apprenticeships can be a huge success for everyone

Asbestos analyst Jake is a shining star

IT’S National Apprenticeship Week and what better way to celebrate than by shining the spotlight on asbestos analyst, Jake Newell.

Jake joined Acorn Analytical Services as an apprentice in 2021 and since then he has completed his training, shown outstanding commitment and dedication to his role and been recognised for his efforts by winning – and being nominated for – a number of prestigious awards.

This week he is helping to spread the word about Acorn’s work – and the benefits of apprenticeships for young people and employers – by appearing on NLive Radio and BBC Radio Northampton.

In this blog we share Jake’s story and explain more about the work we do to nurture the next generation of asbestos consultants.

‘Creating the perfect environment where everyone can thrive’

Acorn Analytical Services is a hotbed of talent and many people come to us to learn more about the industry.

As a company, we work hard to develop an environment where all our staff can thrive, in particular all our apprentices, who are trained to the highest standards and given all the tools and experience they need to take the next steps in their careers.

And Jake is a shining example of just how successful an apprenticeship can be.

Director Ian Stone said: “From day one Jake has been inspiring. He always wants to know more and fully understand the subject area.  He consistently goes above and beyond his duties to complete his work. When he is training, he always put in extra hours in evenings and weekends of study.

“As his confidence and knowledge grows, he is willing to share it with everyone around him, whether that’s friends, family, clients or colleagues.

“He is raising awareness of asbestos among a new generation – many of whom were not even born when asbestos was banned in new buildings more than 20 years ago.

“The impact of Jake’s hard work and dedication may not be fully understood for many years to come but there is no doubt in our minds that the work he is doing now will save lives in the future.”

Recognising true talent and rewarding commitment

It’s been quite a year for Jake, who was a finalist in the Apprentice of the Year category at the Northamptonshire Business Excellence Awards in November.

In December, Jake was named SHP’s Rising Star UK award – an accolade reserved for the most promising young people in the health and safety industry.

Jake said: “It means so much to me to receive this award and to work with such an amazing team at Acorn – we’re like one big family.

“Winning the award has really helped to boost my confidence and I’m really grateful to have been given this amazing opportunity.

“Learning more about the industry has definitely changed the way I look at things. I was really surprised to learn how many different products contain asbestos. When I’m at home now or visiting my friends, I’m looking around for asbestos and pointing it out to them. When you learn about it you want to share that knowledge with others.”
