An asbestos reinspection – under the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 and specifically for compliance with Regulation 4 The Duty to Manage Asbestos in non-domestic premises, there is a requirement that an assessment is made of any asbestos containing materials.

These assessments are usually refereed to as an asbestos reinspection, inspection of previously identified asbestos containing materials or asbestos reinspection survey.

The purpose of this type of assessment is to check the materials condition and inspect for any signs of deterioration.  The reasoning behind this requirement is that asbestos can become damaged or deteriorate over time.  Deterioration can either be down to accidental damage, weathering wear and tear etc.

When an asbestos containing materials condition changes, the associated risks (material risk) with the product can change substantially and may no longer be safe and manageable.

Why do you need to reinspect your asbestos?

The Approved Code of Practice for The Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 states:

“As a minimum, the management plan, including records and drawings, should be reviewed every 12 months.

Therefore, an asbestos reinspection should be undertaken annually as an absolute minimum.

An asbestos reinspection will include all asbestos containing materials as previously identified during any management, refurbishment or demolition surveys that have been completed and provided to Acorn.  We can reinspect any previous report you have whether this is in hard copy or electronic format.

An asbestos reinspection must be undertaken by a competent person.  HSE define a competent person as someone who has sufficient training and experience or knowledge and other qualities.  Our asbestos reinspection surveyors are fully competent to undertake your reinspection which will also be covered under our UKAS accreditation.

Once the asbestos reinspection has been completed we will produce a new report containing new photographs of the materials along with new recommendations of how the material should be managed moving forward.

Does the company have the technical competence to undertake your asbestos reinspection?

They also all have several years of experience in carrying out the different types of asbestos reinspections in a wide variety of premises.

We’re externally audited by UKAS. The United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS) is the sole national accreditation body for the United Kingdom. UKAS is recognised by government, to assess against internationally agreed standards, organisations that provide certification, testing, inspection and calibration services.

We hold the following UKAS accreditations:

  • Asbestos Surveys (ISO 17020)
  • Laboratory Testing of Asbestos Samples (ISO 17025)

Material Risk Assessments

We carry out a material risk assessment on all items inspected. This assesses the likelihood of the material releasing asbestos fibres should it be damaged or disturbed. This assessment forms the basis of how we assess the overall risk from the asbestos containing materials.
